Rashford, Martial or both? Stats reveal which forward must start in Manchester derby

Should Jose Mourinho start Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial or both in Manchester United's starting XI against Manchester City on Thursday? It's a debate that has split the opinion of fans, however we can reveal the best option, according to Premier League statistics this season.

When asked in a Twitter Q&A if Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial could form a successful partnership, Manchester United legend Gary Neville tweeted "I don't see them as a partnership" adding "it doesn't look natural".

At Oulala.com we have taken a look at how Manchester United have performed in the Premier League when Jose Mourinho has opted to start either Rashford, Martial or both this season.

The duo have both been named in the starting XI in just three league games. United are still yet to record a win this season when the pair have started together, drawing against Arsenal and West Brom and losing to Watford, averaging 0.7 goals and 0.7 points per game.

In the 11 matches that Jose Mourinho has opted for Rashford ahead of Martial, United have won four, drawn six and lost one. In those, the Red Devils have scored an average of 1.4 goals per game, collecting 18 points.

Our analysis suggests that of the three choices, starting Martial ahead of Rashford is Mourinho's best option based on statistics.

United are unbeaten when the Frenchman has been preferred to Rashford, winning an incredible seven out of 10 games. They have averaged more goals per game (1.6), while they have collected a very healthy 2.4 points per match when just Martial has been named in the starting XI.

In a clash that will go some way in deciding the fate of both Manchester's European adventures next season, Mourinho's decision in which of Rashford or Martial to start the game could be vital to the result, especially if he opts for both.
