Mo Salah vs Kevin De Bruyne: Who deserves to win Player of the Year?

Stat Attack | Posted on by
The front-runners for this season's Player of the Year award, Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne, go head-to-head on Sunday as Liverpool welcome Manchester City to Anfield. While bookmakers have the Belgian as their clear favourite, stats released by daily fantasy football game Oulala.com reveal the Egyptian is in fact the more deserving of the prize.
Mohamed Salah was crowned African Player of the Year for 2017, while he also picked up his fourth out of a possible five Player of the Month awards at Liverpool in December. However, despite netting 17 league goals this season on top of his individual accolades, the Egyptian sits second favourite (4/1) for the Premier League's PFA Player of the Year behind clear favourite, Kevin De Bruyne (3/10).
Alongside Manchester City teammate Leroy Sane, De Bruyne currently tops the charts for most assists in the Premier League (9), having orchestrated his side to a 15 point lead in English football's top flight.

Do the stats support Kevin De Bruyne's position as favourite for the award?

In a word, no.
Although De Bruyne has recorded more assists, key passes and a better pass completion to Salah, the Liverpool player has scored almost three times more goals, has more successful take-ons, more shots and has registered a far better conversion rate. While most importantly, Salah's average of 72.6 minutes to score or assist in the Premier League this season is a massive 52.8 minutes less than De Bruyne.
