Matic vs Bakayoko: Are Man United or Chelsea getting the better player?

Stat Attack | Posted on by
Manchester United will have to wait until Chelsea agree terms with Monaco's Tiemoue Bakayoko before they land Nemanja Matic for a reported £40 million fee. The Serbian's first-team future at the London club appears under threat with the imminent arrival of Bakayoko, paving a way for a move to Old Trafford.

With both transfers expected to gather pace this week, our stats team at Oulala.com have taken a look at how Nemanja Matic and Tiemoue Bakayoko compared in eight key areas in the Premier League and Ligue 1 last season, in an attempt to reveal which of Man United and Chelsea will land the better player.

While our stats show Matic leads for passing and creativity, Bakayoko comes out on top defensively.

With N'Golo Kante alongside him at Chelsea, Matic's freedom to roam forward last season was evident by his tally of assists (7), passes per game (53) and key passes per game (0.7).

Playing at Chelsea alongside his fellow countryman, Kante, Bakayoko would strengthen the Blues' midfield defensively judging by his stats for Monaco last season; winning an impressive number of tackles (2.2), interceptions (1.8) and clearances (1.7) per game in Ligue 1.

Matic's (28) rumoured fee of £40 million, when compared to the £35 million reported for Bakayoko (22), suggest Chelsea will be getting the better deal financially and with age on the side of the young Frenchman, longevity too. However with Antonio Conte looking to strengthen the Blues defensively and Jose Mourinho's hunt for a player capable of linking defence and attack, the stats suggest both clubs will be happy with their new signings.
